You may not know this, but India has a longstanding tradition of pulp-style storytelling (though more frequently incorporating supernatural elements), with heroes known as 'Aiyyars'. The resemblance to Burgess Meredith and Fred Gwynne (who starred together in the old show 'Car 54 where are you?') TV show was purely accidental, but if anyone asks it was totally on purpose.
